LATAG,
During your regular LATAG meeting on Tuesday, January 12, 2010, I was asked to provide information regarding the building engineer at Morrison Elementary vacuuming releases of vermiculite insulation at the school. In particular, there was question about the movement of the bleachers causing continued releases.
As background information, a Tetra Tech team performed an inspection of Morrison Elementary on July 8, 2008, to look for evidence of vermiculite insulation or soil amendments. This inspection was performed in accordance with the Troy Asbestos Property Evaluation Work Plan (Tetra Tech, July 9, 2007). The inspection teams noted vermiculite attic insulation in the gymnasium area and associated equipment closet. Tetra Tech field technicians returned to Morrison Elementary on August 21, 2007, to assist with a cleaning and sealing of the gymnasium. The school was provided a HEPA vacuum and cleaning instruction in case of future releases. On Friday, August 24, 2007, CDM’s response team collected air samples from the gymnasium area and all samples passed clearance standards.
On Wednesday of this week I spoke with Brady Selle, Troy Schools Superintendent regarding this situation. He spoke with numerous parties at Morrison Elementary, including the building engineers and principal. According to his conversations, there has been no release of vermiculite from the bleachers (or the entire gym area) in at least the last year. Ron has been sealing holes and using the HEPA vacuum if any minor release was noticed anywhere in the school. The bleachers are no longer leaking as they have been adequately sealed.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have further questions or concerns.
Thank you,
Catherine LeCours Montana DEQ (406) 841-5040
