Debate Continues Over New Casino in Libby

By: Phillip Erquiaga
Tuesday, February 5, 2008

Honorable Mayor Berget and Libby City Council Members;

Given the public concern over the proposed “Fraternal Moose Hall” within the Libby Shopping Center, thereby adding yet another casino to the roughly 10 in the “City of Eagles,” I would like to request two agenda discussion/action items added to March City Council Meeting agenda.
First; To review state law as it relates to local governments in regulating gambling.
Second; I ask the Mayor and City Council to adopt a City Business License schedule for businesses engaged in gaming and the serving of alcohol that would allow these businesses to contribute to the betterment of the community.

...the possible opening of the “Fraternal Moose Hall,” next to Ace Hardware, about the second week of January and it came as a complete shock.  It seems unimaginable that the people of Libby could allow a drinking and gambling establishment across from a grade school.  Children pass by this spot daily going to and from school. Do we so lack concern for our children to the extent that we don’t mind that they’re exposed to drunks in the parking lot they walk through daily.

It’s hard to continue the quality of work if you increase the quantity of work beyond what you can effectively manage. We may be getting to the point where we’ve reached that threshold.”

Speak to Power

Wednesday, December 5
...Libby have suffered from economic failure of the community, health issues, and the financial burden of providing medical care to the hundreds of victims who have developed lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis from the vermiculite that was provided free to the locals for insulation, gardening and other purposes, such as flood control in the creeks. Many in Libby suggest that a declaration of a public health emergency is the only solution to get this mountain community back on its feet.
